Task 2A: Shooting Practice & Editing

This assignment aims to explore students' production shooting and editing environment. Project 2 consist of 2 x Shooting and editing exercise (Shooting: Group; Editing: Individual).

Process

For Task 2 my group was given a storyboard based on a TV show called 'Beef'. I chose the role of Art Director, which meant I was in charge of costumes, makeup, props, and overall art direction during shooting. I prepared a spreadsheet for the costumes and props. During Week 5 we went around campus to shoot the scenes.

After completing shooting in Week 5 with my group members, I began editing my version of the footage. I began by assembling the footage on Premiere Pro

Since Mr.Martin said not to follow the storyboard, I played around with the order of the footage till I found one that fits what I had in mind. I synced the audio for each clip and adjusted the volume levels for each one. After adding the music backtrack I actually moved a couple of shots to better match the progression of the music.

I then moved on to color correction, I tried my best to balance the RGB levels and adjusted based on my preferences. It took a while for me to grasp the process but once I did it was much smoother.

After color correction, I began the color grading process. I added a new adjustable layer on top of my footage. I experimented with a few presets to understand the settings better and then adjusted each scene according to what I had envisioned.

Lastly, I added subtitles to the video using the caption function on Premier Pro and then I added a credit scene at the end of the video.

Task 2B: Tiktok/ Insta Video

Students are to create a TikTok/Insta video that showcases creativity, good composition, editing skills, and an overall well-finished short video.

Process

At first, I decided to do a GRWM (Get Ready With Me) video but after shooting it and editing I found that it wasn't what I really wanted to do and it felt pretty flat overall. So I reshot it this time choosing to shoot a day in my life video.

I added filters to change the colors to match the aesthetic of my video more, so softer, warmer, and brighter hues overall.

I changed my soundtrack from my proposal to a game background music because I felt like it suited the video more.

I added video effects like a camera frame or a horizontal zoom-out. Experimenting with a lot of functions on the app I was using - Capcut.

Reflection

This task really opened my eyes to the shooting process that happens behind the scenes. Just doing it made me understand that it must be really hard to coordinate big projects. I think a lot about how they shot those scenes when watching shows and movies. Editing the video was a fun process, but color grading was a bit hard to grasp because it's very different in a video format in comparison to doing it in photoshop. Overall, I enjoyed this task and would like to continue to practice these new skills.
