Task 2: Visual Analysis
This task requires you to assess, investigate, document, and analyze the
existing art/design work you selected in Task 1. You will study the design
principles found in that work, as well as the size, placement, purpose, and
effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal that you have
chosen.
Selected Artwork
On the Fence by Dan Bejar, 2019, 736 x 964, Digital Illustration,
Observation
The artwork is in a portrait format. In the foreground, the back of a person
wearing a cap is shown. Surrounding them are illustrations of cranes, power
lines, and a factory with smog emerging from it. In the middle ground, there
is an expanse of green hills with a winding path between them. On the hills
are illustrations of wind turbines and solar panel grids. The background is
a beige sky dotted with a few white clouds. The overall color palette is
dark blues, green, and beige.
Analysis
The artwork is divided clearly into the background, middle ground, and
foreground. The juxtaposition of the dark blue in the foreground and the
greens in the middle ground creates a stark contrast. This further
depicts the divide between fossil fuels and renewable energy. In terms of
balance, the visual weight on the left is heavy because of the dark
smog, however, it's balanced out by the turbines, solar panels, and cranes
on the right. The winding path between the hills creates depth
and movement, it leads the viewer's gaze towards the hills.
The person in the foreground is also looking towards the hills, directing
the viewer's gaze. Symbols are used to represent wind turbines, solar
panels, factory smog, and cranes.
Interpretation
Control by Dan Bejar, 2019, 1191x 1500, Digital Illustration,
Rethinking Justice by Dan Bejar, 2023, 1201x1500, Digital Illustration,
The artwork On the Fence was designed for the cover of Harper's
Magazine in the May 2019 issue titled
"Where Our New World Begins: Power, Politics, and The Green New Deal" by
Kevin Baker. This artwork, in particular, focuses on the transition into a world where
the Green New Deal exists. The artwork strongly reflects the message of a
sustainable future with clean and affordable energy.
The two artworks above are other illustrations by Dan Bejar,
titled "Control" and "Rethinking Justice". All three artworks have elements of minimalist design, this
includes a limited color scheme, flat textures, and good use of negative
space. (Babich, 2021). Dan Bejar uses a flat illustration style that is
inspired by minimalist and Swiss design styles, it includes sharp
contrasting colors and grid-based layouts (Davidov, 2024). The medium for
all artworks is digital illustration and in portrait format. They all use
dynamic compositions and contrasting colors. The use of contrasting colors
can be seen in the use of purple/orange and blue/orange in artworks 2 &
3. Each artwork conveys a strong underlying message: clean energy, a battle
for data control, and a legal course that focuses on the voices of the
incarcerated. These artworks are designed to utilize simple elements such as
color, contrast, and composition to create a clear strong message in each
artwork.

Feedback
Week 4: For the phase 3 interpretation, you need to find two
similar artworks. Then discuss the similarities between them, for
example: the software used, illustration style, and message behind them.
Week 5: For the interpretation you should expand more on the
similarities between all three artworks instead of each one separately.
Talk about the visual elements and what art movement/style inspired
them.

Further Reading
I read a few pages from this article about how to conduct a
visual analysis of an artwork. It helped to explain what you can
focus on and how to explain the various elements in an
artwork.
