Week 3: Lecture on usability.
Week 4: Presentation of task 1.

Instructions

Task 1: Mobile Application Proposal

Students are required to create a proposal documentation for their mobile application project. You are required to redesign an existing app that you find unsatisfactory in terms of the user experience or interface design and its subject to preliminary approval by the module coordinator. Students need to do surveys, interviews, market studies and research on the selected topic.

The document should also include key features of their mobile application and provide clear flowchart of the app. The document will determine whether the mobile application idea is good to continue to the next development phase. This task is an iterative process whereby during the assignment period, students are free to get feedback from their peers and module coordinator to further refine their idea.

Process

In Week 1, our task was to find 3 company apps we felt could benefit from enhancing their design. I began by scouring different apps on Google Play Store paying attention to those with low reviews. I eventually settled on CNA News, Dulux Visualizer, and AirAsia. For each app, I took screenshots of every page and started analyzing them.

I wrote down the existing drawbacks and potential solutions for each app. Below is my draft proposal I showed during Week 2.

After receiving feedback in Week 2, I chose Dulux Visualizer MY as the app I would redesign. This was because it had a more extensive user experience to explore. I began to further research and analyze the app. I downloaded the competitor paint apps such as Nippon Paints and Asian Paints.

I worked on my final proposal taking the time to break down different aspects of the Dulux paint app. Focusing on the color catalog and color visualizer. Based on my feedback in Week 3, I continued adding slides to my final proposal.

I added in the user demographic, user research methodologies, user needs, redesign objectives, primary and secondary goals, user testing, and references. Once finalizing the slides, I prepared to present on Week 4.

After presenting in Week 4, Mr.Zeon gave feedback on what to change before the final submission.
I made my user reviews more clear and highlighted key points. I also added the user pain points after that to summarize the key issues.

Then as mentioned in class, I separated the strengths and weaknesses. For each weakness slide, I highlighted the issue and proposed a solution. I then added the competitive analysis, to further explain the problem mentioned in the previous slide.

I continued to refine the slides according to the Week 4 Feedback and my own ideas for improvement. Below is the final proposal slides.

Feedback

Week 2: The news app is fine but doesn't have much user experience. The other two apps (Dulux or Airasia) would be a better choice with more features.

Week 3: So far the content is good, look at the brief in slides for the remaining slides to add.

Week 4: Align user testing and validation to the company app, and elaborate on user demographic. For the existing drawbacks slide ensure graphics are consistent (pink box).

Reflection

Experience
At first, it was tough to try and find the problems in the app design. Some problems stood out immediately but others only came to me after learning more about usability. As I was doing this proposal, I learned more about what a good user interface and user experience is.

Observation
My eyes are now more attuned to the smaller design details such as alignment, text size, labels, contrast, and layout. It always helped me to just change my perspective to a user and test all the functions of the app as if I were buying paint.

Finding.
I found that there's a lot to think about when designing an app. Sometimes features you find a useful addition might just be counteractive for the users. There are so many components you have to think about when you're designing, ultimately you have to remember that the users are the core of your design.

Further Reading

For my further reading, I watched and read some articles by Don Norman. I had previously read his book "Design of Everyday Things" which I really enjoyed and found helpful as a general foundation to Design. His videos highlighted many topics that helped me in my assignment.
