Week 1: Module breakdown and Introduction to games development
Week 2: Lecture on Game Ideation
Week 3: Lecture/Tutorial on 2D Game in Unity
Week 4: Was sick and didn't go to class.
Instructions
Task 1: Game Design Document
Students are required to design and create their own 2D side scrolling/platformer game. The game design document serves as a blueprint for their game and will contain all the necessary information and visual references to develop the game. Sample GDD will be provided as a reference, but students are expected to research more on the matter to determine the necessary content items for their own GDD.
Ideation
I started by brainstorming some game ideas. I thought of games I liked to
play like stardew valley, overcooked 2, and kirby. All of them had a fun and
playful aesthetic, very bright visuals, and exciting gameplay. Growing up I
also really loved Tinkerbell and all things fairy related so I thought it
would be fun to have a game inspired by that.
Realistically, I was a beginner in Unity so I couldn't make super
complicated gameplays. Most of the senior's work included battle, narrative,
collecting items, running. So I considered story-based gameplays,
escaping/hiding, and battling.

Game Idea 1: CropEscape!
Concept
You play as a Farmer Coco, and they have a massive debt. Coco was
always ambitious to
say the least, you invested in a lot of stocks because you thought you
could earn money super
fast. But all your stocks plummeted the next day, leaving you in
absolute soul-crushing debt.
Coco devised a plan to get out of your crisis, if you could boost your
crop growth then you could
theoretically sell enough to live. You dumped buckets of fertilizer on
your crops. Accidentally
creating mutant crops free in the wild.
Now you have to chase after them and harvest them? Defeat the mutant
crops and sell their
remains to earn money! No one has to know they were mutant crops
right?
Game Objective
- Harvest all your escaped mutant crops to earn money!
Game Idea 2: Sylvie's Quest
Concept
You play as Sylvie, a young wind-fairy on a life-saving adventure.
Sylvie’s mom has a deadly
illness known as Rizels. The only cure is a plant known as Zephyr,
rumored to only grow on the
highest mountain peaks. The high altitudes are especially perilous
for fairies, but Sylvie is willing
to do anything to cure her mom.
Join Sylvie on a dangerous journey to obtain Zephyr, taking you
through complex terrains,
deadly traps and confrontations with pesky monsters.
Game Objectives
- Obtain the Zephyr plant which grows at the top of the mountains!
Game Idea 3: Kael
Concept
You play Kael, a lost shadow-walker - able to blend with shadows and
manipulate darkness.
Kael is lost and is on a journey to Otieno, a place of eternal night
said to be the home of
shadow-walkers. Since light itself can harm even kill
shadow-walkers.
Kael, having lived outside his whole life, longs for a sense of
belonging and freedom. He’s tired
of being alienated by others, for being different. Confined to his
small home with no one around.
He’s spent his whole life preparing to journey to Otieno, and now
he’s almost there.
Journey with Kael through the umbra caverns, avoiding lights and
dangerous enemies!
Game Objectives
- Journey through dangerous caverns to reach Otieno.

Chosen Game Idea: Crop Escape!
After the proposal, we had to pick one game idea to further develop. I
felt Crop Escape was my strongest idea because it had a good story and I
could come up with a lot of ideas for the design. I compiled and added
more information into a game design document. Which you can see below:

Feedback
Week 5: For all the game ideas develop the storyline more, and be
specific in the game mechanics. Describe in detail the game mechanisms and
characters.
Reflection
OverallIt was actually really tough thinking of ideas. There's so many games I like - but they're more complex so it didn't really translate that well for game ideas. Going through major art block so this was the best ideas I could squeeze out of me.
At the end of the day, I think the game storyline doesn't need to be that complex for a platformer game. As long as it's enjoyable and a good launch pad for more ideas in the future.
