Task 1: Proposal Presentation

Our task was to create a proposal presentation for our client. We are required to conduct research on our target audience from a human-centered perspective to understand their needs and form insights into their actual problem. We then need to create a proposed design solution to the project brief.

Project Briefing and Forming Group

In Week 1, we kicked off the start of our project journey by forming a group of seven and choosing TrueXR as our client. Our project, WarisanXR, aims to immerse visitors in Malaysia's cultural heritage through AR glasses, blending physical spaces with holograms and digital content.

Group Members:

  1. Reema Arif Hamza (Group Leader)
  2. Joey Lok Wai San
  3. Thanaphorn Daensaad
  4. Michael Chan Henn Loong
  5. Samiha El-ghobbas
  6. Ian Choo Xin Zhe
  7. Johnny Lam
We created a WhatsApp group to communicate, and I made a google drive to centralize all our collaboration work. We also have our massive and extremely detailed Miro Board for all our progress (and is yassified thanks to Joey).

Project Summary

WarisanXR is TrueXR's flagship project designed to immerse visitors in Malaysia's cultural heritage through augmented reality at the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur. The project involves creating a pilot MR experience in the Museum Sementara space, where visitors will interact with holograms and augmented reality content. The focus is on exploring user experience design for MR and conducting research on how museum visitors engage with exhibits to enhance the overall experience.

Empathy Stage

Contextual Research

In Week 2 of our WarisanXR project, we focused on conducting in-depth contextual research to better understand the project and how to design effective mixed reality (MR) experiences. We divided the work between us and compiled all our information into our Miro Board (pdf below).

Research Tasks:
  1. Technologies - Johnny
  2. Immersion Features - Mic
  3. Cultural Elements First Half - Ian
  4. Cultural Elements Second Half - Samiha
  5. Mixed Reality Experiences in other museums - Joey
  6. What makes an engaging and immersive MR experience - Han
  7. Interview Questions and Summary - Reema
My part was collecting and writing up interview questions for our upcoming meeting with our client - Justin TrueXR's CEO. I also made a summary of everyone's research later on.

Survey

In Week 3, as part of our user research, we created a survey to gain insights into our target audience and learn more about their interests, concerns, and expectations. The survey consisted of 23 questions, which we consulted on with Mr. Mike and refined based on his feedback.

Tasks:

  • Survey - Han, Joey, Samiha, Michael
  • Collecting Responses - All
  • Survey Analysis - Han, Joey

Fig. 1.4 Survey, Week 3 (11/10/2024)

After distributing the survey, we collected a total of 100 responses. Han and Joey made a survey analysis and summarized each section of the survey. It can be found in our Miro board, below is a screenshot of it.

User Personas, User Journey Map and Empathy Map

Before sending out our survey we created a set of three initial user personas. These were based of existing Muzium Negara demographic information which could be found in their annual report. These personas helped guide us on who to send our survey to. In Week 4, after receiving our survey responses we updated our user personas, user journey map, and empathy map.

Tasks:

  • User Personas - Reema, Ian, Johnny
  • Finalize User Personas - Ian
  • User Journey Map - Reema, Samiha, Michael
  • Empathy Map - Johnny

Define Stage

Insight Discovery, Problem Statement, and How Might We?

In Week 5, we started working on the Insight Discovery Section. Each member had to write the top five ideas that were jumping out at them (these were issues/concerns coming from the data). We then clustered the similar ideas as categories, from there we identified five key themes. At the end we had five insight statements to refer to.

From our insight statements we created three How Might We questions. These were created with the goal for us to find opportunities for design and help us start generating ideas. We also formulated our problem statement (user + need + insight), later on we would always refer back to our problem statement.

Site Visit - Muzium Negara

On the weekend (Oct 27) our group went to Muzium Negara for a site visit. We went to take a look at the proposed exhibition space and layout. While we were there we learned more about Malaysian History.

Fig. 1.13 Site Visit, Week 5 (27/10/2024)

Ideation Stage

During Week 6 we worked on the Ideation Stage. We collaborated and brainstormed ideas, these ideas were rough, and served as a launchpad for further ideas.

Tasks:

  • Art Direction Ideas - Ian
  • Typography - Ian
  • Color Palette - Samiha, Joey
  • Spatial Design - Han, Reema
  • Content Design - Ian, Michael
  • Content Flow - Michael
  • Pedestal Design - Johnny
  • Marketing Design - Joey
  • Initial Storyboard - Han

Art Direction

Ian worked on the typography and art direction ideas. The initial ideas had a lot of different styles, after getting feedback from Mr. Mike we focused more on Malaysian heritage.

Fig. 1.14 Initial Art Direction Ideas, Week 6 (01/11/2024)

Samiha and Joey worked on the color palette, there was a lot of ideas and we all voted on a color palette together. The one we voted on was heritage themed but still had modern/vibrant undertones.

Content Design & Flow

Ian and Michael worked on the content design, and Michael did the flow. There was a lot of ideas and sketches at the beginning for all these different cultural elements. After a group meeting we narrowed it down five of the most engaging content ideas: wau bulan, lion dance, mak yong, wayang kulit, gasing, congkak.

Fig. 1.17 Content Design, Week 6 (01/11/2024)

Spatial Design

Me and Han worked on the spatial design. We came up with a lot of different ideas and references to include. We also did a lot of research into managing crowd flow, best layouts, and aspects to consider when designing an exhibition.

Fig. 1.18 Spatial Design, Week 6 (01/11/2024)

Pedestal Design

Johnny worked on the pedestal design, he made pedestals based on traditional elements and created digital sketches for each of them.

Fig. 1.19 Pedestal Design, Week 6 (01/11/2024)

Marketing Design

Joey worked on the marketing design, she came up with a bunch of ideas for each phase of the user journey. The magic mirror photo booth was for sure a winner because it saved so much space.

Fig. 1.20 Marketing Design, Week 6 (01/11/2024)

Initial Storyboard

Han worked on the initial storyboard, which was later updated.

Fig. 1.21 Initial Storyboard, Week 6 (01/11/2024)

Proposed Idea & Development

During Week 7 and 8 we continued to develop our ideas further and worked on the proposal slides.

Theme and Storyline

In Week 7 we consulted Mr. Mike for feedback. The main comment was that we need to have an overarching theme or storyline that ties all our station together. During class we brainstormed ideas, and Joey came up with this Merdeka storyline which follows a young boy celebrating Merdeka in the 1980/90s.

Developing our Ideas

We continued to refine our ideas further and updated things to match our new theme.

Tasks:

  • Content & Sketches - Joey, Johnny
  • User Journey Map - Ian, Michael
  • UI - Michael
  • Navigation - Joey
  • Art Direction- Ian, Samiha
  • Exhibition Design - Reema
  • Key Visual - Reema
  • Storyboard - Han (Joey, Johnny, Ian, Samiha joined in to help bcs too much work)
  • Slide Design - Ian (everyone added in the content later)
  • Presenting - Michael, Reema

Yeah everyone worked on updating and refining our designs. Then we all worked on putting together the proposal slides. The night before everyone was pitching in to help with the storyboard because it ended up being a very heavy task.

    Task 2: Project Management

The task is to collaboratively manage design processes by developing a detailed production schedule that tracks tasks, resources, design processes, and iterations to meet deadlines. Each member must create a comprehensive design and production plan for their individual contributions to the group’s overall solution.

    Design Iteration Stage

After the proposal presentation in Week 9, we focused on improving our design according to the feedback that was given. The key points to improve are:

    • Floorplan- Should be more detailed and to scale, add ticketing booth and tutorial/setup section.
    • Stations- Each station should be storyboarded in detail: including content, screen design, make sure it relates to all user personas. More in detail for each station in feedback sheet.
    • Art direction should be less neon and more toned down to match cultural/heritage feel.
    • Interactivity and engagement- should consider free roaming 3d models, effects, and motion graphics. Consider details of gestures and haptics for each station.

    Floorplan

For the proposal presentation I made a pretty rough floorplan and based on the feedback we needed to have a proper detailed plan. So I found a couple more references, and did some space bubble diagrams. After tinkering around with a couple of different ideas I settled on one that was the most practical, efficient, and had a good space flow. I plotted it into AutoCAD and then made a few changes later after another feedback session.

    Fig. 2.3 Final Floorplan, Week 10 (29/11/2024)

    Art Direction

We received feedback to make our color palette less neon (which our color palette actually was but our presentation did not reflect that). Samiha worked on improving our color palette to focus more on heritage. The color palette is inspired by local flora and fauna, incorporating rich earthy tones while still having vibrant undertones to appeal to the youth.

For our overall art direction - it changed a couple times in the making of the key visuals. Initially, it had more of a nostalgic vibe because our story was set in the 1980/1990s. Later on we realized that the story was told from the perspective of a child, in which everything seems a bit more magical (especially with a kid's imagination). So it ended up being "Magical Realism with a mix of Nostalgia".

Fig. 2.5 Final Art Direction, Week 14 (20/12/2024)

    Storyline

Our initial storyline remained the same, a kid in the 1980/1990s is celebrating Merdeka with his family. This tied back directly to our problem statement "want visitors to have a more personal connection to Malaysia's heritage".

We decided to make it more engaging we could had a gamification storyline. We brainstormed a couple of ideas before settling on one. The kid greets visitors at the start of the journey, saying he'll be joining them. Then a monkey pops up and steals his pendant, the kid begs you to help him find it.

Throughout the whole exhibition the monkey pops up in the background. At the end of the experience, the monkey is scared of the fireworks and drops the pendant. The kid thanks you and drops the lore on why the pendant is so important. The pendant has a picture of the first Merdeka that overlays on the present Merdeka (5th station) - transitions to the present celebration boom boom.

    Interactions

We set our main interactions, limiting it to four intuitive and basic gestures. Tap, Pinch (zoom), Rotate, and Swipe.

    Fig. 2.7 Interactions, Week 13 (06/12/2024)

    Content Design

During one of our consultation sessions Mr. Mike noted how all our stations should be balanced in terms of immersion and engagement. With that in mind we developed our content design to be more engaging (in some of the more boring stations) and refined all our content to be fun, inclusive, and interesting. We found 3D models/assets for each station, created wireframes/sketches, and related it back to our user personas.

    UI

Michael did the initial UI design, the idea was to have it look like postcards and stamps. Then later on Joey improved the UI design to be more consistent and adhere to spatial computing principles.

    Fig. 2.13 UI Figma, Week 14 (20/12/2024)

    Map Animation

Johnny created a map animation walkthrough of our exhibition floorplan to include in our storyboard. You can see it in the final presentation.

    Achievement Animation

Ian created achievement animations to play at the end of each station. Visitors receive a unique badge for that station, all the badges are included in the post card at the end. You can see it in the final presentation.

    Key Visuals

The key visuals were the main end product for our final presentation. In Week 13 everyone made sketches for the layout of each station and collected resources for Han to use when photoshopping later.

Over the course of 2 weeks the key visuals went through 3-4 rounds of iterations after receiving feedback from Mr. Mike. Han and Joey did a lot of work on the key visuals (Samiha also pitched in for one visual). Below is the Miro board showing the progress of our key visuals.

Fig. 2.14 Key Visual Progress, Week 15 (04/01/2025)

    Storyboard

In Week 11, Mr. Mike suggested we split our storyboard into different layers (projection mapping, animals, motion graphics, 3D, UI). This was so when presented we can show how all the layers add up together.

    Fig. 2.15 Storyboard Layers Week 14 (20/12/2024)

In the end our key visuals ended up being separated into layers and inserted into the storyboard. The rest of the storyboard was distributed among everyone to work on (can see in our final presentation).

    Promotional Design

Ian worked on our promotion designs which included posters, wristband tickets, and the social media booth. He also made a set of collaterals/mockups to show how the designs would look.

    Reflection

To see weekly reflections you can look at the project tracking document.

    Overall Reflection
Minor Project was unique because we were working with actual clients on actual projects. So there was this vague sense of pressure to meet their expectations. But I really learned a lot about what it's actually like to work on a project that requires all these different skillsets to collaborate. At the same time even things that fell under the purview of UI/UX was very new and required lots of research.

For this project I was the group leader, which I do end up being for a lot of other modules (._.`) I'm not really sure why but I try my best. I am pretty organized so I like making drives, spreadsheets, and schedules. While, I do usually have a handle on what to do for my other group assignments this project was a bit different. I wasn't quite sure what the expected end result of WarisanXR was supposed to be (and it fluctuated a lot throughout the semester).  Because of that I got confused on what instructions to give my groupmates sometimes.

My group was great, everyone had lots of ideas and we had good collaborative discussions on all the different design elements. Shoutout to Han and Joey because they did so much (without anyone asking) and they really helped out so much. Grateful I got to be part of a good group for this project.

Yeah it was a chaotic 14 weeks, I'm glad it's over. I learned a lot about designing for augmented reality and exhibits. I also learned a lot as a group leader and how to work with other people, so I'll try to carry these lessons onto my future projects or workspace.
